CaprockFree Range

Wild aoudad on open canyon country. No high fence. You glass from the rim, plan the stalk and close the distance on foot.

The country

Wild sheep.
Steep ground.

Our place sits in the breaks below the Caprock escarpment. Red-rock canyons, juniper, mesquite and loose shale slopes that drop off fast.

Aoudad came into this country decades ago and took to it like they were born here. They are not penned and they are not fed. They live on the ledges, water at night and bed where they can see you coming. That is the whole point.

We run a light grazing lease, keep the water working and take a set number of rams and ewes each year so the herd stays healthy and the range holds up.

Free rangeStandard cattle fence only. Animals come and go across the breaks.
Fair chaseSpot and stalk on foot. No blinds, no feeders on aoudad.
How a canyon hunt works

One day, four moves

  1. 1

    Glass the rims

We are set up on a rim before sunup with good glass and a spotting scope. Sheep feed on the slopes early and are easiest to find then.

  2. 2

    Plan the stalk

Once a good ram beds, we pick the route, check the wind and pick a shooting spot. Sometimes that takes ten minutes. Sometimes an hour.

  3. 3

    Close the distance

Quiet walking on rock and shale, using cuts and junipers for cover. We get you to a solid rest, range him and you take the shot when you are ready.

  4. 4

    Pack out

Photos, then we quarter him and pack out to the truck. Your guide carries the heavy load. Evening glassing if you still have tags.

Shot distance

Know your numbers

Most shots here run 200 to 450 yards, often across a canyon and at an angle.

  • Under 200 is rare. Sheep see too well.
  • 300 is common. Know your drop cold.
  • Past 450 we keep stalking. We do not take those shots.
  • Steep angles shoot high. Your guide will give you the angle-corrected range.

Camp is a rock-walled camp house built back in the canyon. Bunks, hot showers, a wood stove and good coffee. Nothing fancy and nobody needs it to be.

Supper is shared around the fire pit. Hunters, guides and whoever is cooking. Steaks, green chile stew, a pot of beans. You will sleep fine.

      Questions

      Straight answers

Call if you do not see yours. We would rather talk it through before you book.

How fit do I need to be?

Decent shape. You should be able to walk 4 to 6 miles on rocky ground with some steep climbs, at your own pace. We plan stalks around the hunter, but the country does not flatten out for anyone. Run the readiness check above.

      What about the wind?

It blows here, especially in spring. A steady 15 mph is a normal day. Wind decides the stalk route and limits how far we will shoot. On a hard wind day we glass more and stalk closer.

What rifle and cartridge should I bring?

A flat-shooting rifle you know well. Anything in the common 6.5 to .30 caliber range with a quality bonded or controlled-expansion bullet works. Aoudad are tough, so pick enough gun. A scope with a dial turret or a reticle you have practiced with matters more than the cartridge.

      Do I need a rangefinder?

Bring one if you have one, ideally with angle compensation. Your guide carries one too, and will call the range and the angle before every shot.

      What license do I need?

Every hunter needs a valid Texas hunting license, sold online by Texas Parks & Wildlife. Exotics like aoudad have no closed season. Mule deer follow the state general season and tagging rules. We will walk you through it when you book.

      Can I bring a non-hunter?

Yes, $200 a day covers lodging and meals. They are welcome on the stalk if they can keep quiet and keep up.

      What happens to the meat?

We quarter and bag it in the field, then keep it cold at camp. Bring a cooler, or we can point you to a processor on the way home.
